About the Pastor
Rev. Fred Gagnon, our Pastor for the past twelve plus years retired from full-time ministry at the end of December, 2021 with at heartfelt and teary-eyed send off ceremony. While our church actively searches for a new settled pastor we are blessed to have the services of the Rev. Paul Shupe serving as Bridge Pastor while the church seeks an Interim Pastor.
Anyone who has attended recent Sunday services in person or remotely has witnessed Rev. Shupe's spirituality, eloquence and profound loving message.
Paul Shupe is a recently retired minister, having served for more than 33 years as pastor and teacher of congregations in Falmouth, Maine, Madison, Wisconsin, and Lexington, Massachusetts.
At Vanderbilt Divinity School, and in these wonderful congregations he learned how to be the minister that he is, and he is grateful for all who have shared the work with him over the years. Of particular delight has been the opportunity to work with 20 seminary students preparing for ministry, all of whom are now serving congregations from Maine to California. Paul enjoys biking, walking, reading, jazz, the Red Sox and Celtics, and watching the birds gather at the feeder. He lives with his wife, the artist MaryAnn Shupe, in Portland. They have two grown sons, one living in New Gloucester, Maine, and one in Boston, Massachusetts.
The First Congregational Church of Scarborough, Maine welcomes our new pastors and all that would like to participate in our weekly church services. We believe this church is very special with fairly traditional weekly services, choir, warm and welcoming people, and the hot coffee, delicious refreshments and fellowship at post-worship "neighboring" gatherings in our vestry. We urge you to visit and see for yourself!
We are always on the lookout for visitors, and try our best to let them know, without being overwhelming, that we’re glad they came to check us out. So, whether you are looking for a permanent spiritual home, you’re a tourist in the area doing some sightseeing and want to find a church to attend while you’re here, or you are just plain curious, we hope you will stop in and see us some Sunday. We would love to have you be our guest!
